English speaking mamas...

This is an amazing video/documentary about home birth, made by Rikki Lake. It's 1.5 hours, and well worth the time.

Hi my name is Tamara I have just moved from the USA (where I have lived most of my adult life) to Switzerland with my Swiss hubby. I am 8 weeks pregnant and this video brought tears to my eyes. I wish I could give birth at home but my hubby (son of an OBGYN and pediatrician) is against it, as it is discouraged here in geneva. The good thing is that at least at the hospital I heard that it is mannely Mid wifes who do the work and they try to keep it as natural as possible and that makes up for the fact that I won't have my baby a home.

Thanks for this wonderful video

If you are looking for the most natural birth you can get in Geneva, contact the midwives association (Arcade Sages-Femmes, http://www.arcade-sages-femmes.ch/default.asp?np=3). Some of them must speak English since they organise an English prenatal class: http://www.arcade-sages-femmes.ch/page.asp?np=3&id=45

You can be followed by a midwife during your pregnancy instead of an OBGYN (as long as the pregnancy is going on normally and there is no special medical problem). She does all the normal exams and you go to a specialist for the ultrasound. Then when the labour starts she comes to your home to help you at the begining, and then you go to the hospital with her. After the birth you can go back home as soon as it is medically OK and she comes to help you out as much as needed during the first 10 days.

At least it is how I understand it, so ask them, you should start quite soon in your pregnancy. The good thing compared to giving birth at home is that you or your baby can get all medical attention in case anything goes wrong. But if everything goes well (as I hope for you of course!) at least you're taken care of by a midwife in quite a natural way if not at home. And you can discuss whatever you really want for the birth beforehand.

All the best with your pregnancy!

Ca sera plus facile pour trouver une sage-femme alors ! Comme tu écrivais en anglais je pensais que tu ne parlais pas forcément bien français, tant mieux ! Bonne continuation !
